DSC_9991Maryvale Academy strives to develop the whole person, spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, culturally and physically. Thus, physical education is an important part of a student’s well-rounded education. A balanced physical education program is intended to guide children into being physically active for a lifetime and to encourage healthy lifestyles.

At Maryvale, teachers will engage students in physical activity that is appropriately designed for all developmental levels. Instructional activities will develop physical attributes such as co-ordination, speed, agility, power, balance, flexibility and endurance. There is also a focus on strengthening character by emphasizing co-operation, teamwork, perseverance, respect, honesty, responsibility, compassion, friendly competition and sportsmanship.

In the physical education program at Maryvale, students are exposed to a variety of indoor sports such as basketball, badminton, floor hockey, and volleyball, as well as different games like tag, skipping, scoop ball, and dodge ball in the gymnasium. Outdoor sports and games include soccer, baseball, skating, ice hockey, cross-country running, DSC_9976track & field, and capture-the-flag. Special in-house events such as the annual winter Olympics are enjoyed by the students. Students are also given the opportunity to train for and to enjoy some interscholastic competition in cross-country running, track & field and soccer.

Outside of gym class during recess times, students eagerly participate in unstructured physical activity outdoors on the school field on a daily basis, weather permitting.

Some interesting co-curricular outdoor education activities in the past have included canoeing, cycling, camping, rappelling, and orienteering.
