The science curriculum at Maryvale aims to cultivate an interest in and a sense of awe and respect for God’s creation through the study of the life, earth and physical sciences.
Students gain scientific knowledge and inquiry skills through reading, discussion, hands-on exploration and careful observation of the natural world. Students are trained to follow a logical progression of thought, and to observe, organize and communicate scientific ideas clearly and accurately.
Students in kindergarten to grade 4 engage in nature studies of the visible, tangible and more familiar aspects of the natural world about them (ex. plants, animals, water, earth and sky).
As they move into the upper elementary years, students explore the more complex and abstract aspects of the natural world (ex. classification, ecology, anatomy and cell biology, physics, chemistry, astronomy, and geology) more systematically and analytically.
In grades 1 through 4, science is delivered in French as part of the bilingual program.
The science program is enriched by field trips, guest speakers, and annual participation in the Let’s Talk Science All-Science Challenge (of which Maryvale is a two-time Ottawa area winner).
